I was introduced to CrossFit in 2008 while working out with some fellow triathletes at the Coast Guard Academy. After our morning runs, lunchtime swim workouts, and afternoon rides, we thought it would be a great idea to throw in an evening WOD or two. If that doesn’t sound like overtraining, I don’t know what is…

Under that training regimen, I completed several half ironman triathlons, some with respectable times, despite my trademark “barge” style swimming. In time, however, my desire to log countless laps in the pool, hours on the bike, and miles of pounding the pavement faded, while my desire to perform well in daily WOD’s only increased. I stumbled my uneducated way through many a WOD until joining my first box in 2009, while stationed in Portsmouth, NH.
As I increased my work capacity across broad time and modal domains, I began to dabble in boxing. It was CrossFit, and the hard work of my coaches at CrossFit Portsmouth, that helped me remain undefeated in my unit’s “Fight Night.” I was so inspired by the positive change I had observed in myself during just a few short months of CrossFit that I felt compelled to share this new way of life with my fellow Coasties. To that end, I installed a “garage gym” on board the cutter, and began running classes for the crew as an efficient means of staying in shape at sea, where personal time is limited at best.
Two assignments later, I arrived here in PA expecting there to be no official box. Dropping in at the newly opened CrossFit ThunderRidge via recommendation from Kyle Cuttie, I was immediately drawn to the incredible camaraderie and support the environment of CFTR provides. Seeing the way Shawn, Karen, and all the coaches selflessly develop and encourage their athletes, I wanted to do whatever I could to help them succeed. Thank you Shawn and Karen for the opportunity and privilege to help others be strong and get stronger.

I began lifting when I was 12 simply because I was small and, while I couldn't increase my height, I could make myself a bit wider. Like a lot of people, I started with basic bodybuilding style workouts 5 days a week, focusing on a different muscle group every day. I trained like this for awhile with the eventual goal of competing as a bodybuilder. At around 190lbs, I started to notice how slow I was moving and began to shy away from bulking up routines.  I began to seek out other methods of training. I wanted to be more mobile, stronger, and faster. It wasn't until I moved to Denver that I found, with a shove from my sister, an unaffiliated gym that had several awesome CrossFit coaches.  After doing their style of unstructured CrossFit, one of the coaches invited me to York Street CrossFit Denver, where I started CrossFitting and was immediately addicted. I trained with a coach and soon after attained my level 1 cert.  CrossFit has changed my life and helped me grow as a person and as an athlete. Coaching in Denver was amazing and I'm so grateful that Karen and Shawn have made me feel so welcome and given me the opportunity to coach again.

I’ve always been a very active person, I started skateboarding when I was eleven, I skated almost everyday throughout my teenage years. It is a sport that I love, and is the reason why I’ve grown into such an active adult. I started lifting weights in high school, I didn’t know what I wanted from it, and I had no clue if I was doing it right but I trained hard because it made me feel good. After high school I joined the Marine Corps, fitness became more of just a hobby for me, it became more than just something to do to stay healthy. It became a way for me to get better at my competitive job. It was my first time experiencing how my training in the gym could help me in the real world. As time went on, like so many others, I fell victim to routine. I got tired of doing the same old stuff in the weight room; I lost my motivation and enjoyment that I got from it. A friend recommended I try CrossFit, and after a little research I gave it a shot and haven’t stopped since. After serving in the military I moved back home and met Coach Shawn, who introduced me to CrossFit ThunderRidge, and the awesome CFTR athletes. I knew right away that I wanted to coach at CFTR because I love meeting new people and helping others. My goals in life are to attain lots of good experiences, useful knowledge, and great relationships, and of course, to help the athletes at CFTR be safe, have fun, and improve their lives. Thank you Karen and Shawn for giving me the opportunity to coach at CFTR.

I have been active most of my life. Having raised 2 very active boys I didn’t have much choice! In 2009 I was finding it harder and harder to keep up with my boys and decided it was time to do something about it. I found a personal trainer and worked with her for almost a year, just long enough to learn a few things about myself: one, I felt better than I had in years and two, I really wanted to help others.

With that I decided to become a fitness trainer. I wanted to help others feel as good as I did. My husband and I converted our garage into a gym while I earned my fitness trainer certificate from The International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA). Shortly after that I started training people in our garage gym. During this time I started hearing more and more about CrossFit and it piqued my curiosity. In 2011 I started following the WOD’s on the CrossFit main site and implemented them into our programming.
Coaching at CrossFit ThunderRidge has allowed me to help more people than the one on one coaching I do in our garage. I love the box community and the supportive environment. It’s fun and rewarding to help others reach their health and fitness goals.
